Why it isn't called Duck and Noodle Soup.

Why it isn't called Duck and Noodle Soup.

Once upon a time, in a land close to here, but not close in time lived an old man named George. He lived all alone in a big log cabin. He used to have a wife, but she had died long ago. He was often lonely, and missed her a lot, but refused to cry over her because her last wish to him was not to mourn her. So Geroge spent his days tending the land and trying to grow vegetables. But George was old and forgetful so his crops were forgotten and they withered and died. He didn't seem to notice though, he hardly noticed anything anymore. But one day when the man was tending the fields, he heard an awful noise. It sounded so awful the man began to cry. It was the sound of pain and suffering. He could not stand the noise so George went to find where it was comming from. He walked for a while, but the sound steadily grew louder. By now tears were streaming down his cheeks and he cursed himself for being weak. As he approched, he saw a tiny pond, and by that pond, a duck. This horrible painful noise was comming from the poor duck. The man wondered if it was wounded and ran over to help it. As the man drew near he saw another duck lying beside the other. Without needed to check, the man knew the duck was dead. This poor duck had obviously lost a partner. The man knew what loss felt like, so he covered the dead duck with leaves and slowly moved towards the wailing female. He picked her up gently in his old hands and carried her away. "shhh" George whispered, "don't cry little one, everything will be okay" he told the duck as he stroked her bill. She seemed to listen, and stopped wailing. She looked back at the pond, but did not cry. The old man brought her home, but he didn't know what ducks ate, and he certainly didn't have a pond close enough to his house for her. He called the Duck Harriet and she slept with him and followed him aaround. But Harriet did not Quack. Since the day George had found her crying she had not made a sound. George thought it was wrong that she didn't Quack and constantly tried to coax her into it, but she never budged. He brought her on walks, and eventually built a little pond for her, as he didnt want to bring her back to the place her mate had died. One day George was making Chicken Noodle Soup and he saw Harriet wandering out of the house. She seemed intent on going somewhere so George decided it would be safe to follow her. As they moved on, Harriet picked a daisy from the ground delicatly with her bill. She then changed direction and headed to her mates resting place. Although George didn;t want to stop her, he also didn't want to let her go on. But, with her heart guiiding her there, he could not bring himself to stop her. She moved beside the pond, to the exact place that her mate had been, laid the flower down and sat. She sat for a long time, but did not cry. George on the other hand, had neevr seen such devotion from an animal.

After a few minutes Harriet arose and headed back toward the cabin. George walked silently with her. When they went inside, George went to the window to think of his wife. If Harriet could mourn for her mate, he could morn for his, he mourned but did not cry. Suddenly he heard an awful commotion from the kitchen! He ran inside to see what was wrong, and heard the strangest noise. "QUACK QUACK QUACK" But George could not find where it was comming from. He searched the kitchen for her frantically. Then, he laughed. He began laughing so hard his sides began to ache. Harriet had fallen into the chicken noodle soup. But he had laughed, and she had quacked once more. THE END

(I really wish to hell that I wrote this. Alas, I can't lie and say I did. A very good friend of mine wrote it for me to cheer me up. She told me to choose an animal and my favourite food and she'd write a story about it. She did and I liked it so much I decided to share it.)
